What is the BACEN license?
A simple explanation of the regulator, the strength of the license, and what to check before opening an account.
The Banco Central do Brasil, commonly referred to as BACEN or BCB, is the central bank and one of the principal supervisory authorities in Brazil's financial system. Its responsibilities include maintaining financial stability and regulating or supervising financial institutions and other entities that fall within its statutory remit.
For international users researching a Brazilian financial company, the Central Bank's official supervised-institution database is an important due-diligence tool. It allows users to check whether a legal entity appears as authorized, regulated or supervised rather than relying on claims displayed on a commercial website.
BACEN should not, however, be treated as Brazil's sole investment-market regulator. Brazil divides responsibilities between the Central Bank and CVM. Securities-market conduct, intermediaries, equities and derivatives are primarily within CVM's remit. Investors researching a trading or investment firm should therefore identify the exact service being offered and verify the legal entity with the appropriate Brazilian authority.
