What Is a Lot in Forex?

A forex lot measures the size of your trade and determines how much each pip movement is worth. This guide explains standard, mini and micro lots, how lot size changes profit and loss, and how to select a position size based on your account and risk limit.

Forex Lot Meaning

How Does Lot Size Determine Your Trade Exposure and Pip Value?

A lot is a unit used to measure the size of a forex or CFD position. When you select a lot size, you are choosing how many units of the underlying asset your position represents and how strongly the trade will react to price movements.

A larger lot size creates greater market exposure and increases the monetary value of each pip. This means both potential profits and potential losses change more quickly. Lot size should therefore be based on your account balance, risk limit and stop-loss distance rather than your desired profit.

In simple terms, one standard forex lot normally represents 100,000 units of the base currency. Most trading platforms also allow smaller positions such as 0.10 lots and 0.01 lots.

Size

Position Size

The number of currency units represented by your trade.

Pip

Pip Value

The amount gained or lost when the price moves by one pip.

Risk

Trade Risk

The potential loss based on lot size and stop-loss distance.

How Lot Size Works

How Does Forex Lot Size Affect Profit and Loss?

Lot size determines the amount of market exposure and the monetary value of each pip. When you trade a larger position, every pip becomes more valuable. Potential profit increases, but the potential loss rises by exactly the same proportion.

Profit or Loss = Number of Pips × Pip Value

20-pip movement

THEORETICAL

How the calculation works

1

The position size in this example is one standard lot.

2

The approximate pip value is $10 for each pip of movement.

3

Multiply 20 pips by $10 to get a theoretical result of $200.

💡

Pip value is not identical across every instrument

Pip value can vary according to the currency pair, contract size, exchange rate and account currency. Gold, indices, cryptocurrencies and other CFDs may use different contract specifications and price increments.

Forex Lot Example

How Much Does a 30-Pip Move Make or Lose?

Suppose EUR/USD moves by 30 pips. The market movement is the same in each example, but the monetary result changes significantly depending on whether the position is one standard lot, one mini lot or one micro lot.

Price movement

1.00 lot

0.10 lot

Standard Lot

$300

30 × $10

Mini Lot

$30

30 × $1

Micro Lot

$3

30 × $0.10

⚠️

A larger lot size magnifies both outcomes

These figures could represent a profit when the market moves in your favour or a loss when it moves against your position. Choose your lot size according to the amount you can afford to lose, not the profit you hope to make.

What Are the Different Lot Sizes in Forex?

Forex brokers usually offer several position sizes so traders can adjust their exposure to match their account balance and risk plan. The most widely used sizes are standard lots, mini lots and micro lots.

Standard Lot

100,000

1.00 LOT

+

A standard lot normally represents 100,000 units of the base currency in a forex pair. It produces the highest pip value among the commonly used lot sizes.

  • The pip value is often about $10 on major USD-quoted pairs.
  • Price movements have a larger effect on profit and loss.
  • It generally requires more available margin and risk capacity.

Mini Lot

10,000

0.10 LOT

+

A mini lot normally represents 10,000 units of the base currency. It is one-tenth of a standard lot and allows traders to manage exposure more precisely.

  • The pip value is often about $1 on major USD-quoted pairs.
  • It is ten times smaller than a standard lot.
  • It offers more flexibility for medium-sized trading accounts.

Micro Lot

1,000

0.01 LOT

+

A micro lot normally represents 1,000 units of the base currency. It is widely used by beginners and traders testing strategies with smaller exposure.

  • The pip value is often about $0.10 on major USD-quoted pairs.
  • It allows tighter control over the amount at risk.
  • It can be more practical for smaller trading accounts.

Value of Price Movement

How Does Lot Size Affect Pip Value?

Pip value is the amount by which your profit or loss changes when the market moves by one pip. As lot size increases, the monetary value of each pip also increases, causing the value of the open position to change more quickly.

Pip value figures are approximate

The examples above generally apply to major forex pairs where the US dollar is the quote currency. Pip values may differ for JPY pairs, cross-currency pairs, gold, indices and other instruments because of exchange rates and contract specifications.

Forex Risk Management

How Do You Choose the Right Lot Size?

Choosing a forex lot size should not begin with how much you want to earn. It should begin with the amount your account can afford to lose if the trade reaches its stop loss.

Position Size = Risk Amount ÷ Stop-Loss Distance and Pip Value

Maximum risk

$100

RISK AMOUNT

Stop-loss distance

50

PIPS

Required pip value

$2

PER PIP

Position-sizing steps

1

Choose the percentage of your account you are prepared to risk, such as 1% or less.

2

Convert that percentage into a monetary amount, which is $100 in this example.

3

Measure the distance between the entry price and stop loss, which is 50 pips.

4

Divide $100 by 50 pips to get a suitable pip value of approximately $2.

💰

Account Balance

+

Your position size should be appropriate for your account equity, not simply the largest trade your broker allows you to open.

🛡️

Risk per Trade

+

Decide how much money you are prepared to risk before calculating the number of lots you should trade.

📏

Stop-Loss Distance

+

A wider stop loss normally requires a smaller lot size if you want to keep the same amount of money at risk.

📊

Pip Value

+

The monetary value of each pip depends on the lot size, trading instrument, exchange rate and account currency.

⚠️

Do not choose lot size from available margin alone

Leverage may allow you to open a much larger position, but that does not mean your account can safely absorb the potential loss. Your risk amount and stop-loss distance should determine your position size.

Practical position-sizing rules

Define your maximum acceptable loss before entering.
Adjust lot size to match the stop-loss distance.
Do not increase position size to recover a previous loss.
Use a lot size calculator instead of guessing.

What is a lot in forex trading?+
A lot is a standard unit used to measure the size of a forex position. One standard lot normally represents 100,000 units of the base currency, while a mini lot represents 10,000 units and a micro lot represents 1,000 units.
How much is one standard lot in forex?+

Does a larger lot size mean more profit?+
A larger lot size can increase profit when the market moves in your favour, but it increases losses by the same proportion when the market moves against you.
How do I calculate the correct forex lot size?+

What lot size should a beginner use?+
There is no single lot size suitable for every beginner. The position should be small enough to keep the potential loss within a predefined risk limit. Micro lots may provide more control for smaller accounts, but the correct size still depends on the stop loss and account balance.
