What is the BaFin license?
A simple explanation of the regulator, the strength of the license, and what to check before opening an account.
The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, commonly known as BaFin, is Germany's national financial regulator. Established in 2002, it supervises major areas of the German financial system, including banking, insurance, securities trading and authorised financial services institutions.
Forex and CFD brokers may provide services in Germany through a company directly authorised by BaFin or, in some cases, through an entity authorised in another European Economic Area country using cross-border rights. These arrangements are not identical, so investors should identify the actual contracting entity and its home-state regulator.
BaFin provides official databases that help users check whether a financial institution is authorised and which services it may offer. Verification should include the full legal company name, registered address, authorisation details and any information concerning cross-border activity.
